Subject: FW: Update from the Foundation for Financial Planning

Thanksgiving Is The Nicest Time To Express Our Appreciation For Those Whose Friendships And Support Means So Much To Us

At this time of thanksgiving and reflection, The Foundation for Financial Planning counts among our many blessings, the friendship and goodwill of the more than 10,000 individual financial planners and dozens or financial services corporations that have provided charitable donations and support to our cause.  We are grateful for the confidence you have shown us through your support, as we work together to help people in need take control of their financial lives.

We are also grateful to the thousands of financial planners who provide pro bono advice to people in need and crisis.

We wish you, your family and associates a most beautiful Thanksgiving Season.

What Some Financial Planners Are Saying

It has been five years since the attacks on the World Trade Center, and recently several financial planners met in New York and shared some thoughts about their 9-11 pro bono activities.  Here are some of their thoughts about their work and the grant support to the FPA's National Financial Planning Support Center received from the Foundation for Financial Planning.

"We came together as the Financial Planning Association across the country right after 9/11, and the first group to help with funding was the Foundation for Financial Planning. Without the Foundation, the National Financial Planning Support Center may not have started providing support to those in need so quickly. And the Foundation has continued to support our efforts. Recently, when the Red Cross stopped funding all pro bono efforts for the 9/11 rescuers, the Foundation stepped in and gave us a grant so that we could continue the work with the 10,000 people who were affected physically by the 9/11 dust cloud."

One planner shared a story from one of his pro bono clients. “The man that had been in the shower when the first plane struck the tower, and a friend of his knocked on his door and asked if he heard what happened at the World Trade Center? His wife worked there. He turned on the TV in time to watch the second plane fly directly into his wife's floor.”

As he said, he was a witness to his wife's murder. To suddenly be forced to make such huge financial decisions and solve issues for him and his family while suffering from such grief, was almost more than he could bear. To be able to help him and to be able to see the relief in his eyes when I advised him on what he should do and the step-by-step process that he should follow, that was a very rewarding experience for me. And I think it really helped him

"Working with 9/11 victims and family members has been very rewarding. The satisfaction of just being able to help people... you're sitting there talking to them and they realize that they're not alone, there are other people in similar circumstances, and we can help them with their finances, listen to their stories, and make them also realize that there's no immediate decisions they have to make right now. This is really something that's going to affect their lives in the long-term. And, you know, the money is part of it, but so is how we help them address other issues, like their budgeting, and their tax and estate planning."

The Truest Road To Success Lies In Helping Other People Succeed

The Truest Road To Success Lies In Helping Other People Succeed, and financial planning is the perfect profession for living out that belief. Many of you are financial planners because you want to help your clients improve their lives. And many of you extend that desire beyond your clients.

You work hard to improve the quality of life in your community – through your schools, places of worship, charities and service organizations. You believe that if you earn your living from the community, you should give back to that community.

As you are making your list of year end gifts we ask you to consider putting the Foundation for Financial Planning on your list. We hope the Foundation will become a part of your personal philanthropic giving as one of the major ways you give back to the financial planning profession and those in need.

Financial planning is a profession that cares for the greater good, and it is a profession that helps people realize their dreams. Through the Foundation for Financial Planning you can broaden the impact of your efforts. With a gift to the Foundation, you’ll help more people than you’re able to help in your daily practice. In particular, your help will go to those in need or crisis. And they will benefit from the kind of insight and concern you provide to each one of your clients. Through the mission and grants of the Foundation, your gift will enable Americans to reap the benefits of financial planning long after we’re gone. It is a legacy our profession will be proud of.
